Flame retardant back-coated PET fabric with DOPO-based environmentally friendly formulations

There is a great demand for nontoxic flame retardants (FRs) in textile industry to replace harmful halogenated counterparts. On the other hand, availability of eco-friendly phosphorus-based FRs application on synthetic textiles are scarce for, especially back coating application. Thus, this work, non-toxic phosphorus such as EDA-DOPO (ED) and DOPO-PEPA (DP) were applied PET fabric via process. For immobilizing these fabric, three different polymer resins, namely polyurethane, vinylacetate acrylcopolymer, utilized. The FR performance fabrics was evaluated vertical burning test (FAR 25.853), standard used commonly aviation industry. ED formulations (all resins), 5 % (P) content sufficient pass fire test. However, coated with DP failed same P content. To further improve formulations, melamine incorporated synergistic additive.
